Crushed Cashew Nut Shells (CCNS)

Crushed Cashew Nut Shells (“CCNS”) are the shells of cashew nuts that are crushed after the extraction of Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (“CNSL oil”). The physical and chemical characteristics of crushed cashew shells make them a great substitute for fossil fuels. Co-firing with cashew shells at plants using wood chips, coal, and other types of solid fuels has proven to be highly successful. When mixed with wood chips, for instance, the high-energy content of the crushed cashew shells increases the overall calorific value of the fuel mix, leading to greater efficiency and cost savings in energy production.

    The origin of crushed cashew nut shells is South East Asian and West African countries. Vietnam is a major source of CCNS for biomass, with the countries’ ample cashew industry producing significant quantities of this biomass residue. Vietnam is closely followed by Ivory Coast which is also a large producer of CCNS.

    The availability and easy handling of CCNS for biomass is one of the products key advantages, CCNS production in only Vietnam and Ivory Coast generates around 2 million metric tonnes annually. With an established setup in Vietnam and Ivory Coast, CM Biomass is currently the largest supplier of Cashew residues to the international markets.

    Over 95% of the biomass we supply originates from residue streams, including sawmills, vegetable oil production, and deshelling processes. By repurposing these materials, we support local waste management and provide an alternative
